Week 7 Sunshine Challenge: Be Your Own Light

OK, Imma just gonna say it.
I am a damn fine teacher!
I am.
I care about what your kid is learning, the quality of that learning and their ability to use the knowledge for future endeavors.
I am an excellent educator.
I believe that any kid anywhere at any time has the ability and talent for at least one (if not more) thing. Our job as educators is to help the student find their passion or super-power potential and get them to run with it. 
I am a damn good teacher because I care about your kid...even when they act like a jerk to me or someone else....even if they cheat...even if they don't come to class...I care about what happens to them. I care about them having a good life. I don't worry about them making me look bad...School isn't about me...It is about your kids...or, at least, it should be. Not blue ribbons, AIR test scores, trophies, publications and state titles. It should be first about whether or not the school community is caring for and nurturing your son/daughter in their mind, body and spirit.
I don't have a Master's degree. I am 58, and my priority was always to get my own, personal  children through four-year degrees (which I did) and not have all that debt. The thing is, it doesn't take a Master's degree to be a better teacher...maybe a higher paid teacher, but not a better one.
When it comes to teaching or tutoring your kids...
I am fucking amazing!

If anyone ever asks if you saved the world, you say yes. You may never know how or when, but if you've done those things, statistically speaking you've kept someone from going off the rails.

This is an awesome post. Teachers, in many ways, made my life what it is today, and you sound like one of the best out there.

I don't have kids and don't plan to, but if I did, I'd want them to have teachers who thought like you.

Yay! Hurrah for you!

I used to work in the corporate world where I felt like I was a cog in a big, evil machine. I quit to work for a tutoring center and I just feel so much better about myself. It's not at all the same as being a teacher because the workload is a thousand times lighter and I'm only working with kids whose parents have paid for them to be there (the boss is still operating it as a profit-making business so I haven't fully escaped the corporate world), but I still feel as though I'm doing a little bit of good in the world.

I have a friend who works for Huntington Tutoring. She does mostly exam prep and standardized test prep. SHe loves it so much more than traditional teaching, even tho Huntington is a big company for profit.

Teaching can be such a difficult task in this modern era (at least in the States, which I believe is where we both reside). It's SO GOOD that you can honestly be proud of your efforts because so may people will try to tear you down. Our country's future is on your hands.
